Oregon Coast, 2026
Newport sits at the middle of the Oregon coast, where the Yaquina River meets the Pacific under a green steel arch of a bridge. North of town the shoreline flattens into Agate Beach — two miles of hard-packed sand running up to the basalt headland at Yaquina Head, with Oregon's tallest lighthouse standing at the far end of it.
The beach takes its name from the agates that wash out of the gravel beds after winter storms. In September they're mostly sanded over, which is fine: what's left is one of the flattest, most walkable stretches on the coast, and a headland at the end of it with tidepools, a lighthouse, and more seabirds than you can count.

The weekend
St. Louis to the coast. A morning nonstop into Portland, then about two and three-quarter hours southwest — OR-18 over the coast range through McMinnville, then US-101 south from Lincoln City.
Dinner on the waterfront deck at Clearwater, on Newport's bayfront, directly above the sea lions hauled out on Port Dock 1. They bark more or less continuously. That is the reason to sit outside.

Oregon Coast Aquarium, across the bridge in South Beach — the giant Pacific octopus, the seabird aviary, and the shark tunnel that was Keiko's pool before he went home to Iceland.
The rest of the day is open: the beach below the house, Yaquina Head five minutes north for the lighthouse and the Quarry Cove tidepools, or Nye Beach and the bayfront ten minutes south for bookshops and chowder.

Tides
Predictions for NOAA station 9435380, Newport, on Yaquina Bay. Both weekend low tides fall before sunrise, so the tidepools at Quarry Cove are a poor bet this particular weekend — the afternoon lows only drop to about four feet.

Notes
The coast runs well below the valley in September. Mornings fog in, the wind picks up every afternoon, and a sunny forecast still wants a windbreaker. Every Oregon beach is public land to the vegetation line, so you can walk as far as the headland allows — but sneaker waves and drift logs are the real hazard, and the standing advice is never to turn your back on the water.
